Jiraiya, literally meaning "young thunder", is a character from a japanese folktale called "Jiraiya Gouketsu Monogatari" (The tale of the gallant Jiraiya). He was a ninja who uses shapeshifting magic to transform into a gigantic toad. He fell in love with Tsunade, a beautiful young maiden who masters snail magic.
