No Hallowe'en without Jack-o'-Lantern

Image from The Book of Hallowe'en. Caption "No Hallowe'en without a Jack-o'-Lantern", 1919.

The Pumpkin King is probily based off to a modern day Jack-O-Lantern. It's a carved pumpkin. Originally, large turnips were carved. It is associated with the holiday of Samhain and Halloween and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs. In a Jack-O-Lantern, the top of a pumpkin is cut off, the inside flesh is then scooped out, and a monstrous face is carved out, with a lighted candle placed inside to create a ghoulish effect. This is typically seen during Halloween.
