Soul Cakes

Soul Cakes

The making and giving of Soul cakes is a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Soul Cakes are small round cakes filled with spices and raisins and marked with a cross to commemorate the dead. On Halloween, spirits of the dead were said to return to this world, and soul cakes and wine were set out for them overnight. On All-Saints'-Day (Nov 1) and All-Souls-Day (Nov 2), soulers (mainly children and poor) would go from house-to-house singing and begging for soul cakes in exchange for promising to pray for that family's departed to return to the afterlife and enter Heaven; for every cake given, a soul was saved from Purgatory. The practice of souling is said to be the precursor to the modern day trick-or-treating.
