Origin[]

Yamataka Jindai Sakura is a 1800-2000 year old cherry tree on the grounds of the Japanese temple Jisso-ji in the community Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture. The tree belongs to the species Cerasus spachiana f ascendens. With a height of 10.3 meters and a circumference of 11.8 m, an age 1800-2000 years is assumed, which makes it Japan's oldest, thickest cherry tree. For this reason, the tree, on 12 October 1922, was appointed as one of the first natural monuments of Japan. According to legend, the tree was planted by Yamatotakeru, and the Buddhist reformer Nichiren is said to have prayed here.
